Vacation-Ready Hair

An effortless approach to healthy, hydrated hair throughout the summer season.

There’s a certain kind of ease that comes along with an island summer — long afternoons spent between the beach and pool, hair still damp from the ocean, skin carrying traces of salt long after sunset. Beauty feels less rigid, more lived-in. While summer can invite a softer approach to getting ready, it also asks for a bit more intention when it comes to maintaining hair and scalp health.

The conversation around summer hair care has evolved beyond simply avoiding frizz or preserving a blowout. It’s now centered on maintaining the health of the hair itself, especially when frequently exposed to salt water, chlorine and heat. Even Los Angeles-based celebrity stylist Vernon François (he’s worked with everyone from Lupita Nyong’o and Serena Williams to Jessica Simpson and Angela Bassett) is eager to emphasize that you do not need to sacrifice your summer for the sake of hair care.

“Summer should feel freeing, not restrictive, so the goal is to support the hair’s integrity while still allowing people to fully enjoy the season,” says François, who is also a global ambassador for Olaplex and a member of Ulta Beauty’s Pro Team. “Hair that is color-treated, overly dehydrated, highly porous or regularly exposed to heat and environmental stress will naturally require more intentional care during summer months. Tighter curl and coil patterns can also become more vulnerable because moisture escapes more easily, especially when exposed to salt water, chlorine, UV rays and excessive heat.”

A thoughtful cleanse, deep hydration and minimizing unnecessary tension or heat can go a long way,”

One of the simplest yet most overlooked rituals begins before stepping into the water. Saturating the hair with fresh water first helps limit how much salt or chlorine the strands absorb — much like a sponge already filled before being submerged again. Consider it a compelling reason to abide by the hotel poolside signage requesting a quick rinse at the outdoor shower before hopping in. A lightweight leave-in conditioner or protective treatment on the ends of the hair is also a smart, shielding move ahead of prolonged sun exposure.

Scalp care also deserves more attention than it often receives. Between sweat, SPF, salt and product buildup, summer can quickly throw the scalp environment out of balance. François attests to the fact that there’s been a growing awareness in recent years that the scalp is skin and should be treated as such. “It deserves the same level of care and protection as the rest of the body,” he says. “For years, scalp health sat in the background of beauty conversations, but consumers are now beginning to understand its direct relationship to comfort, confidence and overall hair wellness.”

So, after a beach-heavy day, the most effective routine is often the most uncomplicated one: rinse thoroughly, cleanse gently if needed and follow with hydration-focused care (François likes Olaplex’s Bond Maintenance Shampoo and Conditioner and Bonding Oil). Consistency tends to matter far more than complexity, so experts recommend drowning out the noise of overcomplicated summer routines and excessive product layering. “A thoughtful cleanse, deep hydration and minimizing unnecessary tension or heat can go a long way,” says François. Because, after all, the best routine is the one you’ll follow.
