French novelist Marcel Proust coined the term “involuntary memory,” a vivid recollection triggered by the senses. There’s science behind this: scent can bypass conscious thought to directly signal the limbic system, which is responsible for emotions and memories. While Proust was transported by madeleines and tea, we visit our happy place—the beach—even when stuck at the office, courtesy of aquatic perfumes.
According to Nicole Mancini, principal perfumer at international flavoring and fragrance house dsm-firmenich, “Aquatic fragrances are designed to capture the feeling of water: fresh, clean, breezy and lightweight.” That could be an ocean breeze, a cool lakeside morning or even a rainy spring day; the airy quality of these fragrances makes them ideal for warm weather and casual daytime wear.
To harness coastal vibes in a bottle, perfumers often use notes of citrus-lavender, salt air accords and soft watery florals, while additional touches can lend even more specificity to a scent. For example, according to Mancini, “Coconut can add a creamy, sun-warmed dimension” evocative of a tropical getaway while “deeper woods, such as sandalwood and cedarwood, add warmth,” recalling driftwood.
One ingredient historically used in fragrance, ambergris (a substance harvested from the digestive tract of the sperm whale), is known for its sweet, earthy and marine aroma. Its use has been outlawed by many countries, but synthetic molecules such as Cetalox and Ambroxan make effective vegan substitutes. “Ambroxan often rounds it out with a subtly salty, skin-like, oceanic quality,” says Mancini. The result makes for a sexy aquatic perfume that may just remind you of some of your most treasured and intimate seaside memories.
